새로운 관점으로 학교를 보다

캔버스 스튜디오는 자신의 예술작품으로 사회에 공헌하고자 하는 공통된 목적으로 모인 전국 고등학생 연합 미술 동아리입니다. 미래에 미술을 전공하려는 학생들과 그렇지 않은 학생들이 모두 모여 빡빡한 학교 일정 속에서도 학생들이 추구하는 가치를 표현할 수 있다는 것을 증명해보고자 합니다.

저희는 오랜 고심 끝에 ‘학교’라는 테마를 선정하여 학생들이 매일 학교를 가면서 바라보는 학교의 모습을 표현하는 전시를 하기로 했습니다. 전시를 관람하면서 학교, 교육방식, 그리고 전체적인 한국 학교의 교육 시스템을 ‘새로운 관점으로 바라보길’ 바라며 전시 제목은 ‘새로운 관점으로 학교를 보다’ 로 결정되었습니다.

저희는 과거 북일고등학교내에서 진행되었던 두차례의 전시회 ‘자연’ 에 따라 올해는 ‘학교’라는 테마로 전시활동을 이어나가려합니다. 북일고등학교 국제과 내에서만 받았던 동아리원들을 확장하여 두정고 등과 더 많은 학교 학생들과 전시활동을 이어가며 새로운 목표를 세웠습니다. — 바로 지역 아동 봉사센터에서 아이들에게 미술을 가르쳐주는 것입니다. 저희는 더 많은 학생들과 아이들에게 공부만이 전부가 아님을 가르쳐주고자 합니다. ‘교육’이라는 것이 학교 내에서 배우는 정규 과목들뿐만이 아닌 미술활동들을 포함한 다양한 과외활동들도 ‘교육’의 큰 일부분이라는 관점을 아이들에게 심어주는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다. 현재 저희는 펀드레이징을 통하여 번 순수익을 전부 빛된지역아동센터의 미술수업을 위한 재료비로 사용할 예정입니다.

이번 전시를 통해서 여러분께 학교를 바라보는 새로운 관점들을 보여주고 싶습니다. 특히 치열한 경쟁의 늪인 한국 교육 시스템을 알고 있다면 이런 부분들을 고려하며 관람 바랍니다. 저희의 15가지 학교를 바라보는 관점들로 학생들이 바라보는 학교를 있는 그대로 보여주고 싶습니다.

Canvas Studio is an art club for junior high students across the country, who are willing to devote their time to create masterpieces of their own, all with a common goal of helping out others. The club members consist of students who will and will not pursue the arts in the future, demonstrating that even amidst the rigorous school life that is so prevalent in modern-day Korea, it is possible for students to enjoy what they are willing to do.

After much contemplation, we decided to hold an exhibition with the theme ‘School’ in light of showcasing our work as students who go about their daily lives in school. We wanted our audience to Look at education, school, and the overall atmosphere of the Korean education system from a different perspective, hence the title ‘Look: Taking a Look at Education from a New Light.’

We had two successful exhibitions last year at Bugil High School with the theme ‘Nature’, and this year, we decided to take a step further to make our work worth something. We expanded our club to include more people, a greater variety of artwork, and a new goal: to help the community children to approach art class outside of the classes in school, most of which are created to follow a set curriculum. We want the students to learn that there is much more to life than studying – that there is much more joy in taking advantage of artistic expression amidst their rigorous school life. Sometimes, we have to take a look at education from a completely different perspective. Right now, we are conducting a fundraiser and we will be using 100% of the money to fund the materials for art classes, which will be held at the Shining Children‘s Center in Cheonan. Any leftover donations will be used to provide extra art material for the children’s center to use whenever they need to.

All of our hard work has been formulated through thick and thin, through midterms and SATs and ACTs. However, all of us defied all the odds by creating masterpieces that demonstrate that school isn‘t all about studying, but it is about striving to reach our true desires, which, in this case, was art.

Through this exhibition, we hope that all of you can reflect upon what school and education has been to you, especially if you know what the Korean education system is like. We hope that the 15 different perspectives will guide you through the minds of current junior high students in Korea.
